About Midlands 4 Cities (M4C)
DMU has partnered with the Midlands4Cities Doctoral Training Partnership (M4C), which unites eight leading Midlands universities. Its mission is to be a major catalyst for arts and humanities postgraduate research in the Midlands and beyond.
M4C has supported hundreds of PhD students in the completion of an extraordinarily varied range of research topics across arts and humanities. Collaboration is one of the key catalysts for the success of the DTP—collaborative supervision across institutions, support for students to work together across campuses and across disciplines and collaborations between universities and partner organisations such as museums, performing arts venues and cultural centres of all kinds.
All forms of research in Arts and Humanities are supported, including practice research, and joint supervision across multiple institutions ensures that students have the optimal support and expertise to guide their projects.

Specialist areas
Here at DMU we have a number of significant research strengths in the social sciences, with all of our M4C PGRs aligned to one main pathway from these five:

Creative writing
Meet our Postgraduate researchers
Project: The Importance of blending systematic and intuitive approaches to composition.
Supervisors: Profs. John Young and Bret Battey
Impact of my research: This research has capacity to deliver impact through discovery of innovative compositional resources and techniques that promote applications of enriched sonority and colour in a wide range of applied musical settings.
Best bits about DMU: DMU affords exceptional opportunities for career development through researcher training courses."
"Doctoral students are supported in gaining mentored teaching experience.".
Project: Reshaping News Photography in Postcolonial India: Photojournalism in the Social Democratisation of Indian Society (1950s-1970s)
Supervisors: Professor Gil Pasternak
Impact of my research: By offering a visually driven analysis of India’s transition to democracy within a postcolonial framework, it acknowledges the socio-cultural influences that shaped this process beyond a purely "top-down" initiative.
Best bits about DMU: What I appreciate most about studying at DMU is the freedom and encouragement to take ownership of my research and produce meaningful work. Being part of the Photographic History Research Centre has been particularly valuable, as it enables me to engage with peers, the wider research community, and pioneering research in my field.
Empowering our postgraduate researchers to reach their full potential
DMU is committed to supporting all of our postgraduate researchers to reach their full potential. We really value the significant contribution that postgraduate researchers make to our University, both to the research culture and to the development of knowledge in our key areas of expertise. PhD students contribute to the span of research events we host and our range of publications.
Being part of the M4C DTP also opens up a wealth of training, development opportunities and networking opportunities across our university consortium partners, creating a truly vibrant research culture in which to flourish.
At DMU, our M4C PGRs are an integral part of the Research and Innovation Institute for Arts, Design and Humanities with numerous opportunities to join staff and other doctoral students in attending Research Institute events such as seminars and symposia. Being part of a DTP means being belonging to a large cohort of M4C funded PhD researchers across the consortium, with opportunities to attend events and meet fellow scholars at any of the eight participating universities.
Training and Development
M4C PGRs have access to both DMU PGR and DTP-specific training, including
-
DMU social science research methodology modules covering conceptual and general research skills
-
DMU's Researcher Development Programme which entails research training workshops on general and conceptual research skills related to knowledge and understanding, engagement and impact, methodology, research integrity and personal and professional development
-
M4C development workshops and training courses
